Have you discussed School goals with your Teen?

By Aurelia | August 9, 2006

Tis the season to get the teens back into the school routine. Have you spoken to your teen about their school goals this year? Grades, sports, extra-curricular activites and of course preparing for that SAT.

Here are some good goal setting tips to keep in mind when speaking to your teen

  • Goals should be realistic. A goal is realistic if, given time, support and effort, your child stands a reasonably good chance of accomplishing it.
  • Break the goals down into smaller steps or tasks so that your child can feel that they are accomplishing something along the way to the goal.
  • Help your child create a ‘Plan Of Action’ to complete the tasks for his/her goal. Encourage your teen to write the goal and the plan of action down.
  • Help your child stick to the plan, but be flexible as things change and obstacles may come up that you didn’t plan for.
  • Praise your child when the goal, or parts of the goal, have been accomplished.

I love your post - I do need to sit down with my kids so we can chat about goals - this way they know what we expect of them too. I think it is our responsibility as parents to help our kids create their “Plan of Action”. We do need to re-assure them about the importance of goals and help them not get overwhelmed.

We discuss goals daily, weekly and monthly. Having our son homebased taught has really been an eye opener. We now are aware of his real strenghts and weakness in school. We’re able to changes quickly since we’re so involved.

For all parents, were you have your children in public, private or homebase schooling keep the lines of communication open.
