How to Beat Teen Laziness
By Mother | July 31, 2008
Summer time for most teens means that they can lay around the house and just be lazy. No homework to worry about means no stress hence the reason to sleep in and totally relax. Relaxing is fine but to tell you the truth, sometimes, it bugs me when the teens get too relaxed … too lazy. Here are a few tips I can share with you that will help get rid on teen laziness while they are on their summer break:
Let them know what you expect - Tell your teen that it is not acceptable for them to sleep all day long. It’s ok if they wake up later than the regular time they wake up when school is in session but “being in bed all day” is not cool. Watching television all day or surfing the web all day is not a smart way to spend their summer too.
There are some summer activities they can do like going to the beach, to the library, the museum, and the mall (though I’m not sure if that is a good thing). Just make sure if they leave the house that you set some kind of rules and that they follow the rules. if they expect you to pay for their summer activities, then perhaps this is a good time to talk about taking on a summer job or picking up extra chores for more allowance money.
Involve them in activities - They can help around the house, volunteer in activities outside the home or even look for a part-time job. There are tons of volunteer activities they can check out - from helping kids in your local recreation center and children’s program to volunteering at a nursing home. They can even go for an intern position - although it does not pay, they will learn skills they will need ultimately when they start working. If they end up getting a paying job, this is a great way for them to learn responsibility with money and time management as well.
Make sure to spend time with your teen - Find some activities you can do together. Perhaps you can pick up a hobby together like scrapbooking or gardening, or even just go to the mall together or enjoy a movie. You could even do some sports activities like swimming, cycling or roller blading. It doesn’t mean that you have to do these activities everyday this summer. Just know, that this is an opportunity to reconnect with your teen and get to know them more. Make this a summer they will remember because of all the fun times you spend together.
Yes, as parents we usually complain that our teens can get lazy during the summer. But, it is up to us to get them up and be more active. The tips mentioned above will surely help combat teen laziness. Don’t forget to ask your teen if there is something she would like to accomplish before summer ends … then, you can help them achieve it.
