Possible After School Jobs for Teens

By Mother | September 24, 2008

It seems challenging sometimes when you are a parent of a teenager. Somehow, you begin to worry about their grades, future plans, friends they hang out with and if it is a smart idea for them to have a job or not. They may not always agree but if you believe that they will benefit from having a job, discuss with your teen the various possibilities of jobs that they can take on.

One thing to consider before figuring out a possible job is the age of your teen. If they are a “younger teen”, they may be limited to baby-sitting. A majority of the states require teens to be at least 16 before they can get an after school job. Whether your teen is 16 or younger, it still is possible to find an after school job, it just may require a bit of work.

What kind of jobs are out there for teens?Teen boys can work as bag boys or stock clerks at grocery stores. Teen girls can work as cashiers. There are lots of positions available for teens in fast food restaurants. They can also consider being lifeguards (as long as they get the proper training and certification), tutors for younger students and also delivery person for newspapers or even pizza.

Talk to your teen about what kind of jobs they want to take. Then talk to your state’s labor department to find out what limitations your teen might face. You could also ask the school’s guidance counselor to check if they have a list of approved jobs that teens can take. Once your teen finds a job they want to apply for, you can then help them fill up an application form or make a resume.

Make sure to consider the following things:
- What hours will your teen work?
- How will working affect their studies and school work?
- What kind of responsibilities with they have?
- What kind of responsibilities is your teen comfortable with?
- How will they get to work and back home?

Parents want to teach their teens to become responsible. Make sure to have an open line of communication with your teen. Talk to your teen and go in a job search together.

Thanks for these great tips! Have you heard of myfirstpaycheck.com - employment help and jobs for teens? It’s a website created by teens to help their peers find jobs and hits on many of the points you make in this post.
