Coping with Teen Dating - Tips for Parents

By Aurelia | March 19, 2008

Most parents have some fears of the day their child will start dating. It is the big sign that they’re growing up and are entering adulthood. But it’s important to remember that they do still need you now and this is a normal development phase of the teen years. There are also things you can do to make dating easier for both of you.

Talk to your teen about what a good relationship is. While you may think your teen already knows how to date, they probably don’t. Most of their information comes from media that’s meant to be entertaining, not realistic. Make sure your child understands what it means to be in a loving and supporting relationship. Once you’re done talking, set a good example in your relationship with your significant other.

How fast does your teen go?

By Mother | March 9, 2008

I came across a blog post today about a teen boy who was shamed by his mother for over-speeding. This 16 year old boy was caught going 107 mph in a 55-mph zone - WOW … soooo dangerous.

As part of his punishment, his car was taken away by his mom and for 1 month, he was to stand in front of his highschool before and after school holding up a sign that said “I was STUPID. I drove over 100 mph and got caught. Thank God! I could have killed me and my friends.” Some kids laughed at him but most of them understood the reason for the punishment. You can read more about this story here.

Decorating Tips for Your Teens Room

By Mother | February 12, 2008

Years ago, most preteen bedrooms were one dimensional, that is, one color on the walls, perhaps a light or dark carpet, a bed, bureaus, and perhaps a desk with a lamp, and a small overhead light fixture. Today, preteen rooms are exploding with color and themes. Here are some decorating tips for your preteen’s bedroom that are more modern and oriented toward the uniqueness of your teen.

Basically, it’s all about theme, color, furniture, bedding and windows. What is your preteen interested in these days? If you have a teen daughter, she may opt for pastels with white furniture. If you have a teen son, he may go for darker colors and wood furniture.

Valentines Gift Ideas for Teens

By Aurelia | February 3, 2008

By the time kids reach their teen years, so many things that parents do can seem sappy and dull. Gifts on Valentine’s Day can become one of those things. This year, give a gift that shows your teen that parental love is still a cool thing to have in their lives.

Teens these days are into vintage and eclectic things. This includes their clothes, shoes and gadgets. Think of a throwback gift that you can surprise your teen with that will get you a hug or at least a smile of gratitude. Remember the Rubik’s cube or the magic 8 ball? These gifts are especially fun for a girl.

Encourage Your Teen’s Talent

By Mother | February 2, 2008

This is more of a brag than an article. Here’s a short clip of my teens jamming in between doing homework. They are so very musically inclined. My daughter, 17 loves to sing and my son, 15 loves to play musical instruments like guitar, saxophone and lately the keyboard. Can you tell this mom is so proud of them.

If your teen is showing an interest in a certain activity, I suggest that you encourage them. It makes me so happy when I hear them sing or play guitar. Praising them will surely boost their self confidence.

No, you’re not leaving the house wearing that!

By Mother | January 23, 2008

It’s a fact, kids today have a different fashion sense than when we were younger. We can’t blame the teens nowadays though as these styles and trends are dictated by the fashion industry. Have you ever caught yourself saying, “You’re not leaving this house wearing THAT.”? I have - more times than I want to remember.

Know that you are not the only parent dealing with crazy spiked hair and out of this world clothing, like micro-mini skirts or super low-cut jeans and even jeans which hang off the butt. Today’s clothes are meant to reflect ones individuality. It’s not a bad thing - I guess. It’s just that we probably didn’t have as much freedom to express ourselves in a fashion sense back then. If we did, we would have been considered punks or hippies.
